The path to private health insurance (PHI) is open to more people than before, but in most cases it pays to remain in the statutory health insurance (SHI).
In the case of statutory health insurance funds such as BKK EWE, contributions are paid depending on income. Those who switch to private health insurance usually expect lower premiums or better medical care. Once switched to private health insurance, however, the decision can hardly be reversed later. The problem is that even if income falls (e.g., at retirement age), the same premium must continue to be paid, because in private health insurance it is based on age and health status.
In the GKV, children and non-working spouses are insured free of charge. In private health insurance, you have to pay a separate contribution for each family member.
There is no "sorting out" of potential members with the GKV. Before signing up for private health insurance, on the other hand, there is a comprehensive health check. Pre-existing conditions or chronic illnesses must be reported to the insurer. The insurer may charge a risk surcharge on top of the normal premium, may exclude benefits for the specific illness altogether, or may reject the insured person completely in the desired tariff.
